Active Tasmania

Diversity and inclusion

Our community is a diverse mix of people - race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation and religion.

Being inclusive means deliberately providing opportunities for all Tasmanians to participate in sport, recreation and community life. Sport and recreation organisations should be aware of the diversity of their community and provide opportunities for everyone to participate.

For more information on inclusion and diversity in sport and recreation, visit Play by the Rules and the Australian Sports Commission

Aboriginal People

Active Tasmania works with the Aboriginal community, organisations and sporting organisations to provide opportunities for Tasmanian Aboriginal people to access and benefit from participation in sport, recreation and physical activity.

For information, contact 1800 252 476.

LGBTIQA+

Policies and Guidelines

The Australian Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Sport Australia and the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports developed the Guidelines for the Inclusion of Transgender and Gender Diverse People in Sport.

These guidelines highlight legislative requirements and provide sporting organisations with practical advice on how to create and promote an inclusive environment for transgender and gender diverse people in sport.

Some National Sporting Organisations have developed LGBTIQA+ inclusion policies and guidelines. For example:

Pride in Sport

Pride in Sport is Australia’s first and only sporting inclusion program specifically designed to assist sporting organisations at all levels with the inclusion of employees, players, volunteers and spectators with diverse genders and sexualities.

For more information, visit Pride in Sport.

Multicultural People

A number of organisation around the state provide opportunities for multicultural people to participate in local sport and recreation activities.

Older People

Active Tasmania supports the sport and recreation sector to provide opportunities for older Tasmanians to enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle. Being physically active improves and maintains health, independence, cognitive function and quality of life as we age.

Get Active Booklets

Being active is important at every stage of life and age is certainly no barrier to getting active.

Active communities enjoy a number of benefits including improved quality of life, reduced risk of health problems and more community involvement.

The Get Active booklets provides information on activities for older adults to be active and social in their local area. These activities range from gardening, playing golf or tennis, joining in aqua aerobics or playing scrabble. The booklets have ideas to suit a wide range of interests and abilities.

The 2023 editions of Get Active are available now from libraries, councils and Service Tasmania outlets.

There is a booklet for the North and North West.
